Google Search favicon checker
Check whether a favicon file is square, at least 8×8, and in a format Google Search still lists. The old “multiple of 48” rule is gone from the current document.

What this checks
Google Search says the favicon must be a square (1:1 aspect ratio) that is at least 8×8 px. The minimum size requirement is 8×8 px. Google recommends a favicon larger than 48×48 px. Supported file formats are BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, and TIFF. Source: Define a favicon to show in search results, opened 2026-10-06. The page footer said last updated 2026-08-28 UTC.
This check does not crawl a home page, follow a rel=icon link, or know whether Google Search will show the icon.
What a result means
- 8×8 is the published minimum. A 16×16 file meets that minimum. Google recommends larger than 48×48 so the icon looks good on various surfaces.
- 48×48 meets the minimum and is not “larger than 48×48”. 49×49 and 512×512 are above the recommendation.
- WordPress asks for a 512×512 site icon. 512 is not a multiple of 48, which is why older “must be a multiple of 48” checkers still flag it. The current Google page does not require a multiple of 48.
- SVG and WebP are common favicon files. They are not on Google’s published Search list of BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, and TIFF.
- An ICO can contain more than one size. This page reads the ICO directory and uses the largest square image.
- A match here is not a claim that the icon will appear in Google Search. Crawlability, a stable URL, a home-page
rel=iconlink, and Google’s visual-representative rule are outside this file check.
This page does not generate a favicon pack, rewrite HTML, or submit anything to Search Console. For App Store screenshots, use the screenshot checker.
